James was born on the 5th of April 1989 in Esher town in Surrey County to Ninette Mantle and James Thomson. Her mother was an actress, and her father was a musician. She also has two brothers, one younger and one older. Her grandmother Helen Horton was also a very famous actress. As a child, she attended the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, which is an independent co-educational school specializing in dance. Later on, she further studied acting and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, which is a conservatoire and drama school in the year 2010.
